Buying guide
Is a ghost immobiliser worth it?
It's a fair question. You're weighing an upfront cost against a risk that might never happen to you. Here's a straight look at the common objections, without the scare tactics.
The cost
GuardOn's Ghost Immobiliser comes bundled into Phantom Guard at £549, with free installation included, plus £7.50 a month once the device is activated for monitoring and tracking. That's a real cost, and it's fair to weigh it against how much you'd lose if your car was taken, the inconvenience of being without it, and what your insurance excess and any resulting premium increase would look like.
The risk
Keyless car theft is a growing concern for UK drivers, particularly for cars with keyless entry parked on the street. We're not going to hand you an invented statistic to make the decision for you. If you want a real picture of your own risk, your insurer or a local vehicle security specialist is a better source than a marketing page.
Common questions
My car already has an alarm and factory immobiliser. Isn't that enough?
Factory immobilisers are built around your key's signal, which is exactly what keyless theft methods target. Relay attacks capture and amplify that signal from outside your house, and cloned keys copy it outright. A ghost immobiliser works differently: it's a hidden PIN sequence with no wireless signal at all, so there's nothing for that kind of equipment to intercept. It's a separate layer on top of what your car already has, not a replacement for it.
Is keyless theft actually something I need to worry about?
Keyless car theft is a growing concern for UK drivers, and it's one of the main reasons ghost immobilisers exist as a category. We won't quote you a made-up statistic to scare you into buying one. If your car has keyless entry and you park on the street or somewhere it's visible, it's a reasonable thing to weigh up. If you're unsure how exposed your specific car is, your insurer or a local vehicle security specialist can usually tell you.
Will it lower my insurance premium?
Some insurers offer reduced premiums for vehicles fitted with accredited security devices, but this varies by insurer and by accreditation, so we won't promise you a specific discount here. GuardOn's accreditation with the relevant UK security standards bodies is still in progress. If a lower premium is a deciding factor for you, check with your own insurer before you buy, since they'll give you the accurate answer for your policy.
Is the installation a hassle, and will it affect my warranty?
Installation is done for you, free, by a certified technician, usually in under two hours at a time and place that suits you. It doesn't involve cutting into your car's original wiring loom or voiding your manufacturer's warranty when fitted correctly by a professional, which is why we don't recommend DIY fitting for the immobiliser products.
What if I forget the PIN sequence or lock myself out?
You set the sequence yourself during installation, so it's something you choose and can remember, similar to a phone passcode. If you do get stuck, support is available to help you get moving again. It's a genuine trade-off against convenience, so it's worth thinking about whether you're comfortable with an extra step every time you start the car.
Is it worth the cost compared to just relying on a tracker?
It depends what you're protecting against. A tracker helps you find a car after it's taken, it doesn't stop the theft happening. A ghost immobiliser stops the engine starting in the first place. If your priority is prevention rather than recovery, or you want both, that's the gap a ghost immobiliser closes that a tracker alone doesn't.
The bottom line
A ghost immobiliser is worth it if you'd rather stop a theft happening than just find the car afterwards, and if the peace of mind is worth more to you than the monthly cost. It isn't a magic guarantee, no security product is, but it closes a real gap that a factory alarm and key fob don't cover on their own.
